Our Lot 1 and Lot 3 are both now officially on the market, and ready to sell! Our Lot 1 is also staged, so buyers can get an idea of what their new home might look like fully furnished!

New Community: Sitka

We are excited to announce that we have broken ground on another new community, Sitka!

While Sitka is one of our smaller communities with only two homes in it, Sitka promises not to disappoint with its great location in North Rose Hill near Mark Twain Elementary School and Forbes Lake Park, and its Northwest Contemporary style architecture!

Our Sitka 1 will feature our popular Cypress Plan, recently seen in our Cypress Community, and our Sitka 2, which features our newest plan, the Blakely Plan.  The Blakely Plan has many of the same great features as the Cypress Plan, and is almost identical in square footage.  One thing that separates the Blakely Plan as unique is its generous Master Bedroom, which features a deluxe Master Bath, and large walk in closet.

Both of these houses are sure to please, and are expected to be competed July this year.  Be sure to keep them on your radar!

Team Outing – The Big Short

Recently, the team here at Merit Homes took a little outing to see the movie, The Big Short.

Directed by Adam McKay and currently nominated for five Academy Awards including “Best Picture”, “The Big Short” visits some of the players involved in the housing crisis that occurred in 2008, and the events leading up to it.

Film Synopsis:

“In 2008, Wall Street guru Michael Burry realizes that a number of subprime home loans are in danger of defaulting. Burry bets against the housing market by throwing more than $1 billion of his investors’ money into credit default swaps. His actions attract the attention of banker Jared Vennett (Ryan Gosling), hedge-fund specialist Mark Baum (Steve Carell) and other greedy opportunists. Together, these men make a fortune by taking full advantage of the impending economic collapse in America.”

 

Here are a few thoughts our team had after watching the film:

From Josh Lysen, Principal at Merit Homes, “This movie brought back a lot of memories.  I’ll never forget what it was like in the summer and fall of 2008, when Lehman Brother’s bank fell, when WaMu was taken over and shut down by the FDIC and a lot of great people lost their jobs, when Banner Bank, our lender of over two decades, stopped providing construction loans and we had two years worth of land inventory in our pipeline.  I remember getting offers on our homes for sale that were 30% less than our reduced asking price.  I remember the wife of one of my subcontractors coming into my office asking if we had more work for her husband because he hadn’t worked for a month.  Those were tough days.  I’m proud of the way Merit battled through it.  We were fortunate in the end.  I wanted our team to know this story of the recent depression, especially the newer members of our team.  I thought the movie was well done and serves as a good reminder of not to take the real estate market, and what we enjoy doing for granted.

From Greg Griffis, Founding Principal at Merit Homes, “Merit’s movie excursion was a pleasant afternoon to remember.  In darken theater for an hour a half we relived the 2008 thru 2010 global crisis.   This time through the eyes the gluttonous criminals that played a corrupt financial system to the detriment of good people everywhere.  The Big Short a perfect blend of Schindler’s List and the Perfect Storm, once out of the theater the fresh air never tasted so sweet.  We did enjoy the afternoon camaraderie and the movie is worthy of viewing.  It should be noted that my astute business partner will not garner another opportunity to select a film even in the event of a sequel,  for quite some time.

Sidney 2 SOLD!

We are very excited to announce that our Sidney 2 is officially SOLD, closing out our Sidney Community!

Our next Community to be completed, will be our Zee Lane Community.  Located in the Juanita neighborhood of Kirkland, Zee Lane will feature five Northwest Contemporary style homes in typical Merit Homes fashion, and will include five all new floor plans! These homes are scheduled to be completed as soon as next month, so be sure to keep an eye out for them!

New Community: SoCo

We are happy to announce that we have just broken ground on our newest Community, SoCo!

SoCo, which is located in the South Rose Hill community of Kirkland, includes four Northwest contemporary style homes, and features three of our newest floor plans,  Cypress BOrcas and San Juan, as well as, a favored classic, Port Townsend.  In fact, our Orcas Plan on SoCo Lot 3 is our first Floor Plan to feature over 4,000 square feet!

Sidney 2 Open House Tomorrow!

New Construction Estimator/Purchasing Agent Position Open!

We are expanding our team! Currently, we are seeking a full time Estimator/Purchaser to join our Merit Homes family.  The ideal candidate would have a minimum of 2-4 years related experience, the ability to produce material takeoffs, the ability to read blue prints, field drawings and plans, and effective communication skills!

 

The Job Responsibilities will include:

“The Construction Estimator/Purchasing Agent will be responsible for estimating and procurement of construction materials and services in accordance with project requirements and project schedules.  The Construction Estimator/Purchasing Agent will work with the project team to ensure all materials arrive to the project in the correct quantities and as scheduled.  As a valued and key member of the team, the Construction Estimator/Purchasing Agent will perform other duties as required and/or desired to assist the rest of the team during all phases of development including initial project feasibility through completion of each home.  This position has endless potential and can lead into a growing construction management related career with our Team.”
